![]() ![]() The remix completely reworks the original recording into a meticulous synthpop arrangement where Hot Chip’s 20 years of experience combines with Wolf’s contemporary sound in an entirely new way. In contrast, Hot Chip’s remix of “Disco Man” doubles the length of the original and disperses fractured lyrics across entirely new synths and percussion. The track differs from the rest of the album in the fact that it is not explicitly a remix, where the rest of the album significantly alters the original content through introducing new production. Dominic Fike’s feature on “Photo ID” serves as the lead single, successfully incorporating his added verse in a radio-friendly evolution of her viral TikTok hit. Following the success of various remixes of I’m Allergic to Dogs! throughout 2020, Wolf works with a diverse array of collaborators, from alt-rock icon Beck to R&B group Phony Ppl, to explore the potential of every track from her prior EPs. ![]() Wolf combines new and old remixes into a cohesive package across We Love Dogs!. The function of her remixes also differs from the traditional pop trajectory-while remixes are traditionally utilized to increase danceability and generate exposure for both the original artist and remix producer across fanbases, Wolf redefines this typology as a means to experiment. True to her trademark unconventionality, Wolf opts to further explore her existing recordings by collaborating with other artists, instead of a typical approach that would see her moving from her prior EPs You’re a Dog! and I’m Allergic to Dogs! to a debut album. Remi Wolf’s uniquely vibrant and energetic brand of pop knows no bounds in her remix package We Love Dogs!. Whatever emotions were troubling them before have now been exorcised, all thanks to Remi Wolf’s cathartic, feel-good party.Tasty Tracks: Disco Man - Hot Chip Remix, Doctor - Phony Ppl Remix, Thicc - Gabriel Garzón-Montano Remix Elsewhere she strolls through the crowd while singing ‘Quiet On Set’ before an extended ‘Photo ID’ sees her dancing about the stage without a care in the worldīy the time Wolf finally leaves the stage, she’s given the glittery sweatbox her all. I didn’t really know what to do with myself so I wrote a song about it,” she tells the room before ‘Guerrilla’, a groove-led song that explodes with fist-pumping energy on more than one occasion. I would go to a party and feel like I was getting attacked by weird laser beams of energy. It’s chaotic, unexpected and a whole lot of fun – as is Wolf’s questionable British accent that she tries on time and time again. Midway through the set, Wolf briefly takes up a residency behind the drum kit, launching into a furious Rage Against The Machine inspired drum and bass jam while her ousted drummer leads the room in a series of chanted life lessons ( “It’s not ok to get drunk at work”). “This is one of the craziest shows we’ve played,” she says before asking the crowd who isn’t having fun? It’s the only time Moth Club falls silent. ![]() ‘Liz’ is the closest Wolf gets to a ballad but even that goes in hard. There’s the glitching electro bounce of ‘WYD’, the sunny swagger of ‘Sauce’ and impressive covers of both Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ and MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel’. Whatever you want to call it, Wolf makes party music and from the second she hits the stage and launches into the woozy ‘Liquor Store’, every moment is cause for celebration. Hell, she almost scats during ‘Sexy Villain’ but there’s no time to step back and dissect exactly what’s going on. Vocally as well, she’s as comfortable rapping about fast food orgies (‘Quiet On Set) as she is belting out lyrics about love (‘Woo!’). ![]() Tonight, over the course of a 17-song set, the Californian artist dabbles in punk, pop, indie, funk and dance – often at the same time. Throughout, Wolf’s music is impossible to pigeonhole. “But the most therapeutic part for me is performance.” And tonight at London’s Moth Club, Wolf and her fanbase (lovingly nicknamed the Rem Jobs) purge their demons with a euphoric 75-minute set. “Sometimes I’ll write songs out of a need to expel whatever the fuck is going on inside,” she told NME recently as she made her cover debut. Last month, Remi Wolf’s electrifying debut album ‘Juno’ saw the 25-year-old talking candidly about sobriety, turbulent mental health, lust and social anxiety. ![]()

These lines were monitored by the “goons,” who were not only responsible for keeping attendees in order, but also for ensuring that everyone wore a mask. I found some place to eat and then headed back to my hotel room, where I promptly crashed.įriday was my first real taste of DEFCON. I had intended to take part in a little Las Vegas nightlife that evening-maybe even play a little blackjack-but I’d had some minor surgery the week before that I was still recovering from, and I don’t sleep very well in hotels, so I was pretty beat by the time the class was over. The test sessions resulted in 113 new hams and 24 upgrades. Over the weekend, the HRV VE team administered 381 exams, resulting in 147 passes. I’m going to guess that the 2 who didn’t pass on Thursday, and those that didn’t take the test then, eventually did pass. The HRV had test sessions on both Friday and Saturday, so some decided to get in a little more study before attempting the test. Fortunately, the volunteer examiners (VEs) were very forgiving and hung around while I finished up.ġ7 people decided to take the test that day. There were so many questions that the class ran about 45 minutes long. This class asked a lot of good questions. In this respect, the “imagination” represents not just a yearning for change, but also a controversial, powerful device with which to reveal something already embodied in the present situation.įirst page of the manuscript of Rem Koolhaas’s The Surface (1969) – (Click to enlarge) 6 Despite the reasonable aspirations of emancipation – or perhaps thanks to this – the zeitgeist of the late 1960s appears to have been that of a process whereby the bourgeoisie reaffirmed its power. Here the struggle was, in fact, mainly a generational conflict within the same class whereby the expectations were the result of the (unconscious) ambition of the young bourgeois of then taking power, simply following their fathers’ footsteps albeit in a much more radical way. The city that Koolhaas assumes to be the opposite, in fact, is a city inhabited by a society completely bourgeoisized, as Roland Barthes had already stated years before. For Koolhaas, dealing with architecture signifies giving a voice to this dimension of the city, one that is anything but utopian. ![]() Thus, in those peculiar historical circumstances, the Parisian streets revealed an unprecedented, and in some ways surreal, dimension of the city that was clearly readable in one of the most famous slogans painted on the walls of Paris: sous les pavés la plage. Beyond a question of ideology, it was in Paris that Koolhaas was seduced by the power of urban space in its extreme essentiality and artificiality: the street – the space of life where the forces that literally create the city unfold. 5Īmong the various stories narrating Koolhaas’s interest in architecture, in fact, one places him in Paris precisely during the famous events of May 1968, though as a quasi-tourist. 3 While he makes no secret of his suspicion about the extemporaneous culture of wishful thinking of the late 1960s – the very years of his education 4 – Koolhaas’s appearence in the realm of architecture seems to evoke the period’s famous motto: l’imagination au pouvoir. For Koolhaas, theory and narrative are two sides of the same coin. It is well know that Rem Koolhaas, one of the key figures in any discussion of modernity in architecture, has consistently cultivated a discursive, even literary approach to architecture. “Why do we have a mind if not to get our way?” “Has it not been accepted – ever since Kant – that there is an unbridgeable gulf between reality in itself and reality as it appears to us? That our possibilities of knowing have more to do with our own apparatus than with the nature of reality?” Elia Zenghelis 1 Originally appeared in San Rocco Magazine #8 – Winter 2013 under the title: “Modernity and myth: Rem Koolhaas in New York” Rem Koolhaas and the Bourgeois Myth of New York The article was originally published on San Rocco magazine #8, but the author wished to share it online on our website for the sake of debate. What is argued is that Koolhaas, pointing out that the City is a preexisting “condition before being a place ”, – the locus for endogenous forces to unfold -, perpetuates the “rhetoric of the bourgeoisie myth ”, the idea that “the norms of the bourgeoisie are experienced as undeniable or obvious laws of a natural order ” as stated by R.Barthes. ![]() Later on, Mastrigli follows Koolhaas through his years at the Architectural Association school in London and then through his intense activity as a collector of illustrated postcards in 1970’s NYC, while writing “Delirious New York”. The dense paper presents a pretty uncommon image of the architect and theorist, identifying the genesis of his thinking in his roamings across 1968 Parisian streets when they resonated utopian slogans such as “ Sous les pavés la plage!”. ![]() Now that the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale finally came to an end, we think it is the right time to publish this interesting short essay by Italian professor of architectural theory and writer Gabriele Mastrigli on the origins of Rem Koolhaas’ reading of the City, (which is in any way indissociable from his architectural production). ![]() ![]() ![]() If your product is completely unusable, then check out our substitution pages - either brown sugar alternatives, powdered sugar alternatives or other sugar alternatives.
